Peace Akintade: An imaginative and ethereal poetic star in the heart of Saskatoon
“Do I Intimidate” started as an anthropology research question for my university classes. In a series of ten interviews, I asked elders and youths in my Yoruba Community how it felt to wear their traditional attire in public.
Family and culture make us who we are, in our defining moments. This is true of all of our stories, our origin myths, and true of us, the ones who tell them. I am an artist who uses their voice with purpose. Who I am started with family and culture.
"I thought, 'There has to be a place in the conversation about loving your skin colour. There has to be a narrative about how we are more than our trauma. We are more than the experiences that have been put on us.' So I started shifting my poetry into that."
